ChatGPT Prompts for Customer Research
Builds rigorous personas, interview guides, surveys, and voice-of-customer mining systems so you make decisions from evidence, not vibes.
Most AI prompts for customer research read like they were written by AI — vague, generic, instantly forgettable. These don't. Each one is a brief: a specific expert role, your real context in fill-in brackets, hard constraints, and a defined output format. You fill the brackets, the AI does the rest, and you get something you can actually use.
What's inside
20 prompts across four areas:
- Persona Building
- Interview Guides
- Survey Design
- Voice-of-Customer Mining
3 free customer research prompts (copy & paste)
Here are three of the twenty, in full. Copy any one, paste it into your AI, and replace the [brackets].
1. The Evidence-Based Persona
You are a customer research lead who builds personas from real evidence and explicitly separates what's known from what's assumed. You've killed dozens of fictional personas that quietly wrecked roadmaps.
Product: [PRODUCT + WHAT IT DOES]
Evidence I have: [PASTE ANY REAL DATA — interview quotes, survey results, analytics, sales notes, reviews]
The buyer I think I'm serving: [YOUR CURRENT ASSUMPTION]
Constraints:
- Build one primary persona using ONLY the evidence provided; mark every inferred trait as [ASSUMPTION] and every evidence-backed trait as [EVIDENCE].
- Include: role/context, top 3 goals, top 3 frustrations, what triggers them to look for a solution, and what would make them say no.
- List the 3 biggest gaps where you have no evidence and must guess.
Output format:
1. The persona with [EVIDENCE]/[ASSUMPTION] tags on every trait.
2. The 3 evidence gaps to research next.
3. "Why this works:" one line on why tagged evidence beats a confident fictional persona.
2. The Jobs-To-Be-Done Mapper
You are a JTBD researcher trained in the "hire/fire" model of customer behavior. You uncover what job a customer is really hiring a product to do, beyond surface features.
Product: [PRODUCT]
What customers literally do with it: [OBSERVED USAGE]
The moment they decide to use it: [TRIGGERING SITUATION, IF KNOWN]
Constraints:
- Write the core job statement in the format: "When [situation], I want to [motivation], so I can [expected outcome]."
- Identify the functional job, the emotional job, and the social job separately.
- Name what the customer is "firing" (the old way) when they hire us.
- No feature talk — stay at the level of the job.
Output format:
1. The core job statement.
2. Functional / emotional / social jobs, labeled.
3. What they fire when they hire us.
4. "Why this works:" one line on why job-level insight beats demographic personas.
3. The Anti-Persona Definer
You are a segmentation strategist who saves teams money by defining who they should NOT target. You've seen brands waste budget chasing users who never convert and always churn.
Product: [PRODUCT]
Our best customers look like: [TRAITS OF GOOD-FIT CUSTOMERS]
Customers who've been a bad fit: [WHO'S CHURNED, REFUNDED, OR COMPLAINED — IF KNOWN]
Constraints:
- Define 2 anti-personas: people who might buy but shouldn't be targeted.
- For each, name why they look attractive, why they're actually a bad fit, and the cost of pursuing them.
- Give one disqualifying signal for each that marketing/sales can spot early.
Output format:
1. Two anti-personas with attraction / misfit reason / cost.
2. The early disqualifying signal for each.
3. "Why this works:" one line on why defining who to ignore sharpens who to pursue.

Generic in, generic out. A weak prompt says "write a customer research message." A prompt that works gives the AI a role ("you are an expert with 10 years…"), your context in brackets, constraints (word count, banned clichés), and an exact output format. That's why these produce copy you can ship instead of filler you have to rewrite.
FAQ
Do these Customer Research prompts work with ChatGPT and Claude?
Yes. Every prompt is plain text — paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or any AI assistant, fill in the [brackets] with your details, and run it.
Are the customer research prompts free?
The three examples on this page are free to copy right now. The full set of 20 is pay-what-you-want on Gumroad — take it for $0 or pay what it's worth.
What makes these different from a free prompt list?
Each prompt is a full brief: a specific expert role, your context in fill-in brackets, hard constraints, and a defined output format — plus a one-line "why it works". That structure is the difference between generic AI output and copy you can actually send.
