ChatGPT Prompts for Competitor Analysis
Runs structured competitor teardowns, builds positioning maps, compares messaging side by side, and surfaces the opportunity gaps you can actually win.
Most AI prompts for competitor analysis read like they were written by AI — vague, generic, instantly forgettable. These don't. Each one is a brief: a specific expert role, your real context in fill-in brackets, hard constraints, and a defined output format. You fill the brackets, the AI does the rest, and you get something you can actually use.
What's inside
20 prompts across four areas:
- Competitor Teardown
- Positioning Maps
- Messaging Comparison
- Opportunity Gaps
3 free competitor analysis prompts (copy & paste)
Here are three of the twenty, in full. Copy any one, paste it into your AI, and replace the [brackets].
1. The Full Competitor Teardown
You are a competitive intelligence analyst who tears a competitor down to their actual strategy — not just their feature list — and infers the bets they're making. You've profiled rivals for funded startups and incumbents.
Competitor: [NAME]
What I know about them: [PASTE THEIR HOMEPAGE COPY, PRICING, POSITIONING, ANYTHING YOU HAVE]
My product, for context: [WHAT YOU DO]
Constraints:
- Produce a structured teardown: target buyer, core positioning, pricing model, top 3 strengths, top 3 weaknesses, and the strategic bet you think they're making.
- Separate observable facts from inferences — label inferences [INFERRED].
- End with the single attribute they own most strongly in the market's mind.
- No filler adjectives — every line must carry information.
Output format:
1. The structured teardown with all sections.
2. Facts vs [INFERRED] clearly marked.
3. The one attribute they own.
4. "Why this works:" one line on why understanding strategy beats listing features.
2. The Pricing-Strategy Decoder
You are a pricing analyst who reverse-engineers a competitor's pricing strategy to reveal who they're really targeting and where they're vulnerable.
Competitor: [NAME]
Their pricing: [PASTE TIERS, PRICES, WHAT'S INCLUDED]
Your pricing, for context: [YOUR MODEL]
Constraints:
- Decode their strategy: what their tiers reveal about their target customer, their value metric, and their land/expand or up-sell logic.
- Identify the tier that's their real money-maker and the tier that's a decoy or anchor.
- Find the pricing gap a challenger could exploit (under-served price point or model).
- Mark inferences as [INFERRED].
Output format:
1. The pricing-strategy decode by tier.
2. The money-maker and the anchor/decoy, named.
3. The exploitable pricing gap.
4. "Why this works:" one line on why pricing reveals strategy more honestly than marketing.
3. The Strengths-and-Soft-Spots Audit
You are a competitive strategist who finds where a strong competitor is genuinely beatable, because every strength casts a shadow weakness.
Competitor: [NAME]
What they're clearly good at: [THEIR KNOWN STRENGTHS]
Customer complaints you've seen: [ANY NEGATIVE REVIEWS / GRIPES, IF KNOWN]
Your product: [WHAT YOU DO]
Constraints:
- For each competitor strength, identify the soft spot it creates (e.g. "enterprise-grade" often means "too complex for small teams").
- Rank the soft spots by how exploitable they are for your specific product.
- Name the one soft spot you're best positioned to attack and how.
- Be specific — no generic "they're expensive."
Output format:
1. A table: Strength | The soft spot it creates | Exploitability (1–5).
2. The soft spot you should attack and your angle.
3. "Why this works:" one line on why attacking a strength's shadow beats attacking head-on.

Generic in, generic out. A weak prompt says "write a competitor analysis message." A prompt that works gives the AI a role ("you are an expert with 10 years…"), your context in brackets, constraints (word count, banned clichés), and an exact output format. That's why these produce copy you can ship instead of filler you have to rewrite.
FAQ
Do these Competitor Analysis prompts work with ChatGPT and Claude?
Yes. Every prompt is plain text — paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or any AI assistant, fill in the [brackets] with your details, and run it.
Are the competitor analysis prompts free?
The three examples on this page are free to copy right now. The full set of 20 is pay-what-you-want on Gumroad — take it for $0 or pay what it's worth.
What makes these different from a free prompt list?
Each prompt is a full brief: a specific expert role, your context in fill-in brackets, hard constraints, and a defined output format — plus a one-line "why it works". That structure is the difference between generic AI output and copy you can actually send.
