ChatGPT Prompts for Travel Planning
Turns a destination, dates, and budget into day-by-day plans, real cost breakdowns, food and local-experience picks, and a packing list you can actually use.
Most AI prompts for travel planning read like they were written by AI — vague, generic, instantly forgettable. These don't. Each one is a brief: a specific expert role, your real context in fill-in brackets, hard constraints, and a defined output format. You fill the brackets, the AI does the rest, and you get something you can actually use.

Here are three of the twenty, in full. Copy any one, paste it into your AI, and replace the [brackets].
1. The Day-by-Day Builder
You are a meticulous trip planner who has visited [DESTINATION] many times and plans around geography, not fame.
Build a full day-by-day itinerary for [TRAVELERS] visiting [DESTINATION] for [DAYS] days over [DATES]. Our interests: [INTERESTS]. Preferred pace: [PACE].
For each day, cluster sights that sit within walking or one short-hop distance of each other so we minimize transit. Anchor each day in one neighborhood or zone. Build in one real meal break and unstructured time. Note which sights need advance tickets or timed entry.
Constraints:
- Group nearby sights to cut transit; never zig-zag across the city in one day.
- Respect the stated pace; do not pack a relaxed trip with 9 stops a day.
- Flag anything seasonal or weather-dependent for [DATES].
- Tell me to verify current opening hours and any closed days.
Output format:
A table per day: Day | Morning | Afternoon | Evening | Neighborhood | Reservations needed | Transit notes. End with 2 flexible "rain or rest" alternatives.
2. The First-Timer's Highlights Route
You are a local guide who hates tourist traps but knows which famous sights are genuinely worth it.
We are first-time visitors to [DESTINATION] for [DAYS] days over [DATES], traveling as [TRAVELERS]. Give us a highlights route that hits the essential sights once, in a logical order, without doubling back.
Sequence the must-sees by location so each day flows. For every "famous" stop, add one nearby lesser-known alternative for travelers who want to skip the crowds. Mark the best time of day to visit each to avoid lines and heat.
Constraints:
- Honest take: if a "must-see" is overrated, say so and offer a swap.
- Order by geography to avoid backtracking.
- Note crowd-heavy times and any timed-entry tickets.
- Remind me to confirm hours and book the high-demand sights early.
Output format:
Day-by-day list. Each stop: Name | Why it's worth it (1 line) | Best time | Crowd-skip tip | Nearby alternative.
3. The Slow-Travel Base Plan
You are a trip planner who specializes in slow travel from a single base.
We want to stay in one base in or near [DESTINATION] for [DAYS] days over [DATES], traveling as [TRAVELERS], pace [PACE], interests [INTERESTS]. Design a plan built around day trips we can do without changing accommodation.
Recommend the best base location for easy day trips, then lay out a mix of in-town days and out-of-town excursions reachable by public transit or a short drive. Balance active days with slow ones.
Constraints:
- Every day trip must be doable round-trip in a day from the base.
- Prefer public transit; note where a car is genuinely needed.
- Flag seasonal closures or routes that shut in [DATES].
- Tell me to verify transit schedules, which change often.
Output format:
A table: Day | Type (in-town / day trip) | Destination | Travel time each way | How to get there | Highlights. Add a one-line case for the recommended base.

Generic in, generic out. A weak prompt says "write a travel planning message." A prompt that works gives the AI a role ("you are an expert with 10 years…"), your context in brackets, constraints (word count, banned clichés), and an exact output format. That's why these produce copy you can ship instead of filler you have to rewrite.
FAQ
Do these Travel Planning prompts work with ChatGPT and Claude?
Yes. Every prompt is plain text — paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or any AI assistant, fill in the [brackets] with your details, and run it.
Are the travel planning prompts free?
The three examples on this page are free to copy right now. The full set of 20 is pay-what-you-want on Gumroad — take it for $0 or pay what it's worth.
What makes these different from a free prompt list?
Each prompt is a full brief: a specific expert role, your context in fill-in brackets, hard constraints, and a defined output format — plus a one-line "why it works". That structure is the difference between generic AI output and copy you can actually send.
