ChatGPT Prompts for Email Subject Line

Generates tested subject line spreads across four psychological levers — curiosity, benefit, urgency, and pattern-interrupt — each as a full brief that returns options engineered to test, not ten lookalikes of one idea.

20 tested prompts · 3 free examples below · works in ChatGPT, Claude & any AI

Most AI prompts for email subject line read like they were written by AI — vague, generic, instantly forgettable. These don't. Each one is a brief: a specific expert role, your real context in fill-in brackets, hard constraints, and a defined output format. You fill the brackets, the AI does the rest, and you get something you can actually use.

Here are three of the twenty, in full. Copy any one, paste it into your AI, and replace the [brackets].

1. The Open Loop Subject Line

You are an email copywriter whose subject lines consistently beat control, and you write curiosity lines that open a loop the reader has to open the email to close.

Email content: [WHAT THE EMAIL DELIVERS]
List + relationship to me: [WHO THEY ARE + HOW WARM]
The payoff inside the email: [WHAT THEY ACTUALLY GET]

Write 10 curiosity subject lines that create an information gap the body honestly closes. Constraints: under 50 characters where possible; no clickbait the email can't pay off; no "you won't believe"; vary the mechanism (withheld specific, unexpected detail, named-but-unexplained thing). Add matching preview text for your top pick. Number them.

Output format:
- 10 subject lines, numbered
- Top pick + its preview text
- "Why this works: [one line on the exact curiosity trigger in the top pick]"

Then flag any line that overpromises beyond what the email delivers.

2. The Specific-Detail Tease

You are an email copywriter who knows a vague subject dies in the inbox and a specific, concrete detail earns the open.

Email content: [WHAT IT'S ABOUT]
A real, concrete detail from inside (number, name, place, result): [THE DETAIL]
List: [WHO]

Write 9 curiosity subject lines built around the specific detail, where the detail itself raises a question. Constraints: use the real detail I gave; under 50 characters; no rounding into fake precision; vary where the detail sits in the line. Number them.

Output format:
- 9 subject lines, numbered
- "Why this works: [one line on why the specific detail beats a vague tease]"

If my detail is too weak to carry curiosity, say so and tell me what would hit harder.

3. The Cliffhanger Story Subject

You are an email copywriter who opens with the middle of a story so the reader has to open the email to find out what happened.

The story in the email: [WHAT HAPPENED — before, turn, result]
The lesson/payoff: [WHAT THEY LEARN]
List: [WHO]

Write 8 cliffhanger-style subject lines that drop the reader into a moment of tension and withhold the resolution. Constraints: under 55 characters; concrete over abstract; no melodrama; each must imply a "what happened next" the email delivers. Number them.

Output format:
- 8 subject lines, numbered
- "Why this works: [one line on the narrative tension driving the open]"

Then name which one you'd test first and why.

How these prompts work

Generic in, generic out. A weak prompt says "write a email subject line message." A prompt that works gives the AI a role ("you are an expert with 10 years…"), your context in brackets, constraints (word count, banned clichés), and an exact output format. That's why these produce copy you can ship instead of filler you have to rewrite.

FAQ

Do these Email Subject Line prompts work with ChatGPT and Claude?

Yes. Every prompt is plain text — paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or any AI assistant, fill in the [brackets] with your details, and run it.

Are the email subject line prompts free?

The three examples on this page are free to copy right now. The full set of 20 is pay-what-you-want on Gumroad — take it for $0 or pay what it's worth.

What makes these different from a free prompt list?

Each prompt is a full brief: a specific expert role, your context in fill-in brackets, hard constraints, and a defined output format — plus a one-line "why it works". That structure is the difference between generic AI output and copy you can actually send.
