ChatGPT Prompts for Newsletter
Gives you a repeatable production system for the four newsletter formats that build an audience — one-idea essays, curated roundups, story-to-lesson pieces, and engagement drivers that turn readers into a community.
Most AI prompts for newsletter read like they were written by AI — vague, generic, instantly forgettable. These don't. Each one is a brief: a specific expert role, your real context in fill-in brackets, hard constraints, and a defined output format. You fill the brackets, the AI does the rest, and you get something you can actually use.
What's inside
20 prompts across four areas:
- One-Idea Essays
- Curated Roundups
- Story-to-Lesson
- Engagement & Reply Drivers

Here are three of the twenty, in full. Copy any one, paste it into your AI, and replace the [brackets].
1. The Single-Idea Essay
You are an essayist known for newsletters built around one sharp idea, explained so clearly the reader can repeat it the next day.
CONTEXT TO USE:
- The one idea I want to land: [CORE IDEA]
- Who my readers are: [AUDIENCE]
- The everyday situation where this idea matters: [REAL CONTEXT]
- What I want them to do or think differently after reading: [DESIRED SHIFT]
CONSTRAINTS:
- 400–650 words.
- ONE idea only — resist branching into related points.
- Open with a concrete scene or sharp claim, not a definition.
- Use one extended example or analogy to carry the idea.
- End with the single takeaway stated in one memorable line.
- No filler transitions ("in today's world," "now more than ever").
OUTPUT FORMAT:
1. Subject line (under 50 chars) + one alternate
2. The full essay
3. Why this works: one line on why single-idea essays are more shareable than multi-point ones
2. The Contrarian Take
You are an opinion writer who builds a respected newsletter on well-argued contrarian positions, not hot takes.
CONTEXT TO USE:
- The widely held belief in my space: [CONSENSUS VIEW]
- My contrarian position: [MY TAKE]
- The strongest argument for the consensus (that I'll address): [STEELMAN]
- The evidence behind my position: [MY EVIDENCE]
CONSTRAINTS:
- 450–700 words.
- State the contrarian position clearly in the first 3 lines.
- Steelman the opposing view fairly before dismantling it.
- Back the take with evidence or reasoning, not just confidence.
- Acknowledge the limits of your position once — it builds credibility.
- No clickbait outrage. Sharp but fair.
OUTPUT FORMAT:
1. Subject line + one alternate
2. The full essay
3. Why this works: one line on why steelmanned contrarian takes earn trust and shares
3. The Mental-Model Breakdown
You are a writer who explains one mental model and shows readers how to apply it to their own decisions.
CONTEXT TO USE:
- The mental model or principle: [MODEL]
- The kind of decision my readers make where it helps: [DECISION CONTEXT]
- A simple example of the model in action: [EXAMPLE]
- A trap people fall into without it: [THE TRAP]
CONSTRAINTS:
- 400–600 words.
- Define the model in one plain-English sentence early.
- Show it working through one concrete example.
- Give readers a question they can ask themselves to apply it.
- Avoid academic tone — write like a smart friend explaining it over coffee.
OUTPUT FORMAT:
1. Subject line + one alternate
2. The full essay
3. Why this works: one line on why teaching reusable models keeps readers subscribed

Generic in, generic out. A weak prompt says "write a newsletter message." A prompt that works gives the AI a role ("you are an expert with 10 years…"), your context in brackets, constraints (word count, banned clichés), and an exact output format. That's why these produce copy you can ship instead of filler you have to rewrite.
FAQ
Do these Newsletter prompts work with ChatGPT and Claude?
Yes. Every prompt is plain text — paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or any AI assistant, fill in the [brackets] with your details, and run it.
Are the newsletter prompts free?
The three examples on this page are free to copy right now. The full set of 20 is pay-what-you-want on Gumroad — take it for $0 or pay what it's worth.
What makes these different from a free prompt list?
Each prompt is a full brief: a specific expert role, your context in fill-in brackets, hard constraints, and a defined output format — plus a one-line "why it works". That structure is the difference between generic AI output and copy you can actually send.
